Indonesia is the largest coconut producing country in the world, here’s the reason

Diterbitkan Kamis, 19 Desember 2024

Indonesia always occupies the top position in the list of the largest coconut producing countries in the world every year.

This fact makes Indonesia the largest coconut producing country in Southeast Asia.

This answers the question of which country is the largest copra producer in the world. So why did Indonesia become the largest coconut producing country in the world?

World coconut production centers
Worldcoconut production centers based on FAO data for 2014-2018 are in five countries, namely Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and Brazil.

Of these production centers, Indonesia ranks first as the largest coconut producing country in the world with an average production of 18.04 million tonnes of coconut.

The achievement of Indonesia’s coconut production contributed 29.69 percent to the total world coconut production.

The second place is occupied by the Philippines with a contribution of 23.71 percent, followed by India (18.60 percent), Sri Lanka (4.50 percent) and Brazil (4.21 percent). Meanwhile, other countries contribute 19.28 percent to the total world coconut production, which is not even greater than the contribution of Indonesia’s coconut production.

Consistency in Indonesian coconut production
Indonesia’s domination as the world’s largest coconut producing country has lasted for at least five consecutive years from 2014-2018.

As a coconut producer, Indonesia is in tight competition with the Philippines, which consistently ranks second.

Likewise, India has always been in third place in terms of coconut production since 2014.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka and Brazil are competing in fourth and fifth place. In 2014 Brazil’s coconut production outperformed Sri Lanka, but since 2015 Sri Lanka has managed to increase its production and surpass Brazil’s coconut production.
